The ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business and Management is a 120-credit qualification designed for learners aiming to deepen their understanding of key business and management principles. This diploma builds upon prior knowledge, typically gained at Level 4, and equips students with a broader skillset needed for middle management roles.
The Level 5 Extended Diploma in Business and Management (120-credit) provides comprehensive and integrated development, including a potentially synoptic mandatory research project in Unit 4. It allows learners to engage with a wide range of Level 5 business and management topics.
The course deepens technical understanding of specific business areas and key management skills, strengthening existing technical and managerial knowledge for broader management roles and progression to Level 6.
Learners must achieve all four mandatory units plus four optional units.

Typical age: 18 and above. Qualifications should be available without barriers to learners capable of reaching the required standards, with equal opportunity for access and progression. The College reviews each learner’s prior qualifications and experience.
The usual entry profile includes prior study in business, management or a related subject at Level 4 or above; an ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma, Pearson HNC or similar qualification; a relevant Level 4 apprenticeship; or an equivalent international qualification.
Recommended English proficiency is IELTS 5.5, CEFR B2, Cambridge English Advanced 162 or above, Pearson PTE Academic 42–49, or an approved equivalent.
The course is delivered over 10 months and comprises eight units totalling 120 credits. Each unit is approximately five weeks, giving approximately 40 teaching weeks.
Part-time attendance for two days a week through hybrid delivery. Flexible enrolment dates are available.
Scheduled classes total approximately 12 hours a week across two days, alongside approximately 520 hours of non-supervised study.
The qualification is assessed entirely through internally assessed assignments and coursework; there are no formal written examinations. Work is assessed by the approved centre and subject to ATHE quality assurance. The qualification is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.
Methods include written assignments and reports, business case-study analysis, research projects, individual presentations, reflective evaluations, business plans and proposals, practical workplace-based or simulated tasks, data analysis, problem-solving activities and professional discussions or presentations.
The programme prepares learners for broader management roles and progression to Level 6 study, relevant employment or further professional development.
